Dentists diagnose thousands of Americans each year with oral cancer. Oral cancer, found in the mouth and in some areas of the throat, ranks as one of the more preventative cancers. Studies show that tobacco use and alcohol use, or both, increase your chances of developing oral cancer. By limiting or eliminating the intake of these two products, you reduce the risk of developing oral cancer.
If you experience any of the following oral discomforts, do not immediately think you have oral cancer; however, if you experience any of the following oral discomforts, you want to call Titensor Dental immediately for a Flower Mound oral cancer exam.
You also want to look for changes in the alignment of your upper and lower teeth as another sign of oral cancer.
Early detection of any these signs of oral cancer and an oral cancer exam allow Titensor Dental to make a recommendation for the appropriate treatment.
During your dental exam at Titensor Dental, Dr. Titensor or his hygienist look for signs of oral cancer. Your oral cavity consists of your lips, the lining of your cheeks, the front of your tongue, beneath your tongue, the roof of your mouth. Your throat area includes the soft tissue at the back of the roof of your mouth, the back of your tongue, and the tissue where the tongue connects to the base of your mouth. As part of your oral cancer exam, our Flower Mound family dentistry team check these areas thoroughly for any signs of change or abnormalities.
To begin, Dr. Titensor or his hygienist inspect your face, neck, lips, and mouth for signs of cancer. He or she feels the area under your jaw and the sides of your neck to check for lumps. To end, the insides of your lips and cheeks, as well as your tongue and the roof and floor of your mouth, are examined.
The oral cancer exam causes no pain to you, and it can be completed as part of your regular dental checkup.
